Director of Locality & Customer Services

Competitive salary

Some 165,000 people call the borough of Wokingham home. With great schools, up-to-date facilities and a beautiful semi-rural location, there’s an exceptional quality of life – and it’s about to get even better. Right now, we have major plans for the future, designed around our residents: 13,000 new homes and better infrastructure. These exciting plans call for an inspiring leader who’s socially-minded and commercially driven. Change our borough for the better as Director, Locality & Customer Services.

This role gives you the power to give residents fantastic services and create an area where people love to live. You’ll have overall responsibility for facilities such as Libraries, Waste & Recycling, as well as Parks & Countryside. A linchpin in our ongoing improvement, you’ll also take control of Strategic Development Locations, Building Control and Planning & Economic Development. And at the same time, you’ll be making sure we’re closer to communities by encouraging a resident-focused culture and bringing in digital tools and processes. This will empower residents to do more by themselves, as you shape Wokingham to reflect their needs and wishes.

With your leadership expertise you’ll have a firm operational grip. You’ll ensure robust performance management and the delivery of integrated, value for money services. Crucially, you won’t be afraid to explore more commercial approaches or develop alternative revenue streams. This will be vital in a challenging financial climate.

Progressive and entrepreneurial, you’ll be a modern and highly driven leader. You bring board-level experience, ideally in local government (although we’ll consider other sectors). Open and collaborative, you’ll develop current partnerships and forge exciting new links and arrangements. High-level people skills mean you can influence and inspire within the Council and beyond. Meanwhile, commercial acumen means you’ll be in full control of finance and complex business matters. In short, you’ll be a public servant for the 21st century.
