Leicester is Going Places

Leicester is a thriving city, just over an hour from central London by train and immediately adjacent to strategic routes including the M1, M69 and A46. It also lies within the Midland’s “Golden Triangle” of logistics and is less than 20 miles from East Midland’s airport.

In their November 2017 “Good Growth for Cities” index, Price Waterhouse Cooper ranked Leicester 9th in the UK and 3rd in terms of year on year growth since 2016. However, excellent connectivity and continued growth present a transport challenge. A fast, reliable and sustainable transport network is essential to maintain the growth of a healthy city offering a high quality of life and excellent air quality.

The necessary work is already underway. Recent projects include the successful £13m Haymarket Bus Station and the ongoing roll-out of our “Connecting Leicester” programme,  a multi-million pound award-winning package of high quality urban realm and transport improvements.  Nationally, the city has a growing reputation for cycle planning & infrastructure delivery, including a strategic partnership with British Cycling.  Our “Healthier Air for Leicester” Air Quality Action Plan (2015-2026) underpins our strategic transport activity and demonstrates a positive, pro-active approach to this major public health challenge. Recent successes include our Clean Air Zone Agreement with bus operators which will, ultimately, form part of a wider partnership under the Bus Services Act. We continue to be successful in securing significant LLEP and government funds for a range of transport projects.

Looking forward, the development of new, strategic transport thinking and targeted investment in “smart cities” opportunities is central to the continued success of the city. You will play a key role in developing and delivering the transport strategies, projects and programmes to meet this challenge. Leicester offers an opportunity to be innovative and influential, embracing the potential of new technologies and changing legislation whilst developing effective stakeholder partnerships to meet the needs of residents, visitors  and employers from both public and private sectors.
